At Oakwood Academy, academics are only part of what we do! Each day, we strive to support our students' development as a whole — cognitively, physically and emotionally. A large part of our programming is supported by our multidisciplinary team, including an Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Pathologist and Music Therapist. These professionals support our students' ability to navigate their physical world, as well as to relate, engage and communicate with others.
Special Services
The way our bodies move and take in information from the outside world is vital to our everyday functioning. Our Occupational Therapist assesses the way a student moves through space, processes sensory information, and creates motor output — and that’s just the beginning! This allows us to create an individualized plan to support the student’s regulation, gross motor, fine motor and sensory goals, in order to optimize their learning potential.
Each of us utilizes communication, in some form, each and every day — verbal (spoken) communication and/or non-verbal communication (e.g. intentional body movements, gestures, facial expressions). Communication is our foundation for interacting with others; to request or refuse, share information, and more. Our Speech Language Pathologist supports our students in their ability to relate and engage with others, build a continuous flow of communication, as well as to improve aspects of verbal speech (e.g. articulation).
In addition to academics and social-emotional development, students at Oakwood Academy have the opportunity to explore their abilities in different ways, such as through Music Therapy. Music Therapy is weekly and for all students. Sessions are either 1:1 or in small groups, based on the student’s registered Oakwood program. Our Music Therapist utilizes a unique methodology to support each student to express themselves through music. Students develop their self-awareness, and gain confidence in their ability to interact with others in a continuous flow of communication, be it musical, verbal, or non-verbal communication.
